I was starting to write up a post, and I came across this gem from 2011 which said just about everything I had to say and more, and much better I should add; it is a brilliant exposé of the deeply ideological nature of feminism with regards to evolutionary psychology/sociobiology.
I was originally writing a piece about slut-shaming, the “female mafia” and the sexual economy, and why the standard explanation of why this “phenomenon”* occurs given by feminism completely misses the mark. The explanation is that women fight with each other for patriarchal approval, as an oppressed group does. They’re conditioned to hate sexual behaviour, but also exhibit it, and have internalised these conflicting messages. Patriarchy™! This is a complete mind-wank, and a waste of time.
David Adams puts it well:
Women shame other women because promiscuous women monopolize male attention and allow their sex to be accessed by men with little in return. Think of it like undercutting the competition in terms of sexuality.
This is basically what happens with promiscuous women. They lower the price of sexuality for all women. So lets say a woman wants to wait before marriage to have sex. If most of the women in her peer group are making a similar decision then her chance of finding a good man who will accept her conditions are higher because she will have many more men to choose from who are willing to abide by those constraints. If women in her peer group are not making a similar decision she will have a smaller group of men to choose from who are willing to accept her conditions because they can access sex elsewhere without them. So unless the women’s potential sexual value is above and beyond the other women’s current sexual value, she is at a competitive disadvantage. As a result the chaste women would either have to lower her standards, increase her potential sexual value, or accept a much smaller pool of men to choose from.
Basically, this is why women slut-shame. Not because of invisible oppression.
It seems feminists are just as scared to take a good look at the implications of evolution as religious fundamentalists are when it starts to tread on their cherished beliefs.
